Unity: A Rare Yet Wonderful Thing!
Psalm 133:1-3 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! 2 It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments; 3 As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the Lord commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.
For some people, unity has been confused with compromise. Trying to unite with those who do not share the same core beliefs may require compromise, but certainly for brethren (those who are united by common beliefs and a common faith in Christ) unity is very good and pleasant!
If you have been around families and around Christians very long, you know that unity is quite rare. Unfortunately, brethren are more often characterized by division and conflict than unity and peace.
But God tells us that unity is to be valued and desired amongst brethren. It is precious (or rare) like the precious ointment used to anoint Aaron the high priest. It is like the fleeting dew on the mountains. But where brethren do dwell together in unity, God will bless and work.
I wonder how much we seek for unity amongst our brothers and sisters in Christ? How have we allowed unnecessary division and strife to enter in? What could we do to love, unite with, and get along better with our biological and spiritual family? What could be accomplished and how could God bless if we would our confess our pride and work at getting on with others?
