God Hears Those Who Listen – Jer 37
In the final days of Jerusalem, king Zedekiah reigned. Though he had been told many times that Jerusalem would fall, he held out hope that they would prevail over Babylon.
Despite the fact that ‘neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land’ would listen to the words of the Lord, he still expected God to hear them. He had the audacity to go to Jeremiah and ask him to ‘Pray now unto the Lord our God for us.’
It is shocking that King Zedekiah would expect God to hear him and his people when they did not listen to anything God had to say. Yet, we often do the same. We pray and beg God to do for us when we are ignoring what God had already said to us.
May we never expect God to listen to us until we have listened to Him. Father, forgive us for asking you to do things for us when we are not doing what you have already told us to do.
