Him Only Shalt Thou Serve – Luke 4
My family and I are 10 days from heading back to the United Kingdom. We are the process of saying goodbye to our family which is always the hardest part of returning. Yesterday, as we prepared to say goodbye to my parents, I went for a brief walk with my daughter Cali. We listened to Luke 4 and this verse really caught my attention.
“And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.” — Luke 4:8
Satan brazenly tried to get Jesus to worship him. Jesus told him to get behind Him and the only one that anyone should worship is the Lord and “Him only shalt thou serve.”
Even though it is hard to say goodbye and I don’t like disappointing anyone, I have to remember that there is only One that I should serve – the Lord my God.
So often, if we are honest, we claim to serve God but in practice we serve everyone else. We do what we do to please our families, our friends, or others around us, when we are only to serve the Lord our God.
May we make a commitment to only serve the Lord our God today! He is the only One we should worship. He is the Lord. He is God, and He deserves our love and loyalty!
