In the World, But Not Of It – John 17
“I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.” — John 17:15
We live in a world that hates Jesus and hates those who follow Jesus (John 17:14). Those who believe on Jesus are of another world, and our loyalty to the Lord creates friction in this world that is ruled by Satan.
As strangers and pilgrims in this world, there is great evil and great danger. It would seem reasonable to immediately take us out of this world so that we do not give in to the temptations and the dangers of this world.
But that is not what God has for us right away. One day, we will leave this world, but right now, we are left here. And while we are in this hostile world, we can be confident that God will keep us from evil.
He gives us His Word (v.6,14). He prays for us (v.9). He will keep us with all the power of His name (His entire being) (v.11). He gives us His joy (v.13). He gives us His protection and preservation (v.15). He gives us His truth to sanctify us (v.17). He united us to Himself and desires that we live out who we are in Christ (v.21).
So as we face this world, let us do so knowing we are of another world. Let us remember that we have great promises and God’s preserving and protecting power helping us stand for Him.
