Making Much of Jesus – John 3
“He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.” — John 3:29
John the Baptist enjoyed an amazingly popular ministry. Mark 1:5 says that all the land of Judaea and all they of Jerusalem went out to be baptized by him. Those were heady days for John’s followers, but it never went to John’s head.
Later, when it was observed that the crowds were not going to Jesus (John 3:26), John was not at all threatened or jealous. Actually, he was “dead chuffed” (British for “very pleased”).
He said that he felt like the best man at the wedding. He was not trying to be the center of attention, he was just there to make sure that the bridegroom had a great day. And his joy was found in seeing the joy of His friend.
What a great way to think of the ministry! We do all we can to bring people to Jesus, point people to Jesus, and magnify Jesus. We should want Him to increase and to do that we must decrease (John 3:30).
So, let us make much of Jesus today. Let us find our greatest joy in seeing His joy and hearing of people loving and serving Him.
