Out of Bethlehem – Micah 5
Micah 5:2 is an amazing prophecy about the coming of Christ. It tells us that the “ruler of Israel”, the Messiah, will come out of Bethlehem. He is the one “whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.” In other words, the one born in Bethlehem to rule the nation will be the eternal God!
And of course, that is exactly what happened hundreds of years later. The baby in Bethlehem was the One who came to rule the nation and is the eternal Son of God. When He came the first time, it was to suffer and to die for the sins of all mankind. When He returns, it will be to rule and reign.
The fulfillment of this prophecy gives us confidence that all other prophecies about future events will be fulfilled as well. Christ will feed His people and give them peace and protection (v.4-5). He will establish Israel’s dominance over the world and Israel will be a blessing to all (v.6-8). All false gods and idolatry will be cut off out of the land and God’s judgment will be executed on the heathen (v.9-15).
God keeps His Word. God fulfils His promises and prophecies. God is in control. There may be a long period where it looks like nothing is happening, but that is not true. One day, out of Bethlehem came the everlasting God!
