Protected by the Almighty God – Ps 91
This Psalm is rich with imagery of safety and protection from hostile attacks and forces. It details how those who trust in the Lord find refuge and deliverance. Like a bird protected from the snare and like a shield the stops the arrow, God is an Almighty Protector.
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the
Psalm 91:1most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
The key to remember is that this is talking about those who ‘dwell in the secret place of the most High’ and draw very close to Him – those who turn to the Lord and not their own plans – those who trust in His truth (v.4). When we are looking to the Lord and the Lord alone, then we can expect protection, safety, and deliverance.
We must be careful, however, not to misapply this protection, like Satan tries to do in Matthew 4:6,
And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their
Matthew 4:6hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
Just because God promises protection does not mean that we won’t go through times of difficulty and suffering that God will use for our good and His glory. And we should not foolishly test the Lord’s promises by flinging ourselves off buildings as Satan wanted Jesus to do.
So, the promise here is not that we will never face difficulty or problem, but that we can know that any and all attacks on us are vetted by God, in keeping with His plans, and ultimately for our good and His glory. We are not just leaves blown in the wind wherever our adversaries want us to go, we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us even great attack comes. God always works it all together for good.
Prayer: Thank you, Father, that You are Mighty and able to protect me and help me no matter what. Help me to dwell close to You and trust completely in You. Thank You that You provide help and protection from everything that comes my way. Thank You that even when the enemy does his worst that You will still help me to win. Help me to not despair when situations look desperate but to keep trusting and believing You.
