Reasonable Service (Logical Worship) – Romans 12
‘I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.’ — Romans 12:1
The word reasonable means ‘rational’ or ‘logical’. After eleven chapters of God’s grace and mercy, it is only logical that we would now present our bodies to the Lord to serve Him however He sees fit.
The picture here is of those Old Testament believers who would come to worship God at the tabernacle or temple and would bring a sacrifice with them. The animal they would bring would be presented to God to Him. It would be set apart (‘holy’) for Him.
In the same way, after all that God has done for us, we should give ourselves wholly and completely to God. We should set ourselves apart for His service. This is the most logical, rational and reasonable thing that any born-again believer can do!
When we willingly give our entire lives back to the Lord, all of the instructions for the Christian (see some in Romans 12:2-21) flow out of that surrender. The life that is given to the Lord completely, like a living sacrifice, will have no problems obeying and serving in the spirit of Romans 12.
Have you presented your life to the Lord? Have you surrendered all to Him? Are you willing to re-surrender your life to the Lord today to do whatever He wants? He is worthy. His mercies are many and His grace is abundant. Surrender to the Lord is our reasonable service.
