Temporary or Permanent Flourishing – Ps 92

What a great Psalm of rejoicing and praising the Lord because of how great He is and how He blesses those who trust Him. The Psalmist begins by saying that it is good (fitting) to praise the Lord because of all the great things He has done (v.1-5).

It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, And to sing praises unto thy name, O most High:

Psalm 92:1

Of course not everyone sees the greatness and the works of God – some are brutish and foolish (v.6). Brutish means stupid like a brute with no knowledge. This is referring to wicked people (v.7). Their foolishness and stupidity is spiritual – it is talking about their refusal to acknowledge how great God is and how great His works are.

Even though wicked people may flourish for a little while (v.7), they will soon be destroyed and the righteous person who trusts in the Lord will be exalted and established forever. The wicked are like grass that is quickly cut down. The righteous are like a palm tree and a cedar tree that plants, flourishes, and bears fruit into old age (v.12-15).

Two paths are clearly set before us. The path of temporary flourishing through living life one’s own way without God. The path of permanent flourishing through living in light of God’s truth and greatness. Which path with you choose today?
