The Word Was God – John 1
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” — John 1:1
It can be fascinating to get a “behind the scenes” look at how a movie is made, how certain professionals live, etc. John is a “behind the scenes” look at Jesus. Though Jesus never disguised His true identity, God wanted to make sure there was no mistake about who Jesus was and is.
The book begins by telling us that “the Word was God.” This “Word was made flesh” and John says “dwelt among us!” How amazing that the eternal God of heaven, who made all things, who sustains all things, and who existed before anything else would come and live on this earth.
He came to the humble area of Nazareth, which shocked Nathaniel so much that he exclaimed, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” (v.46). Jesus’ entrance into our world was one of extremes – from extreme wealth to extreme poverty; from extreme eternality to extreme limitation.
Let the fact that “the Word was God” and “the Word was made flesh” sink in! Our Saviour, the Lord Jesus was God and yet He loved us so much that He was made one of us so He could bring us to God!
“For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:” — 1 Peter 3:18
