Thy King Cometh – Zech 9
“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: Behold, thy King cometh unto thee: He is just, and having salvation; Lowly, and riding upon an ass, And upon a colt the foal of an ass.” — Zechariah 9:9
The coming of the Lord is the theme in the Bible. It is the thread that connects everything in the Bible and everything that God is doing. We see this in Zechariah 9. There we read more about God’s plan for the future – plans that humble the pride of those who lift themselves up against God – plans that bring great joy to those who submit themselves to His righteous rule.
God makes some amazing promises in this chapter that apply to Israel’s future:
- v.9 Thy King comes.
- v.10 I will bring peace.
- v.11-12 I will set you free.
- v.14 The Lord will be seen over you.
- v.15 The Lord of hosts will defend you.
- v.16-17 The Lord your God will save you.
These promises, of course, have implications for all people. What God has done and will do for Israel was to be of benefit to everyone. Notice v.10, “he shall speak peace unto the heathen; and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth.”
This chapter encourages us and brings great joy as we consider that our King has come, Jesus Christ, and He will return to fulfill all the other promises God made! Just us rejoice greatly and shout for joy because our King has come and will come again!
